Nakasei
About This Spot
Stepping into Nakasei in the heart of Asakusa is like slipping quietly into a serene moment set apart from the city's lively streets. The pace here slows down naturally; the soft rustle of traditional sliding doors opens to reveal a space where every detail invites calm reflection. Natural light pools around lacquered tables, while glimpses of a carefully tended koi pond outside offer a gentle connection to the seasons, all encouraging guests to settle in and savor a thoughtful experience.
The atmosphere balances refined tradition with a warm, welcoming spirit—whether seated by the pond or in one of the intimate tatami rooms, you feel the attentive presence of hosts who understand hospitality as an art. The rhythm of the meal unfolds patiently, each course arriving with care, inviting quiet appreciation rather than hurry.
At Nakasei, tempura is elevated beyond the familiar crispy batter, where freshness and lightness are central. The tempura’s delicate embrace of the seafood or vegetables allows their essence to shine through, enhanced subtly by fine touches like Himalayan salt. Accompanying dishes—from nuanced vinegars to pristine sashimi, and the comforting warmth of miso soup—make the meal unfold like a quiet conversation between ingredients.
Beyond the food itself, this is a place where the atmosphere feels intentionally composed yet effortlessly lived-in, encouraging moments of togetherness without rush. It’s well suited for those who delight in the gentle precision of Kaiseki dining or a carefully curated tempura course which unfolds at its own pace. The attentive, respectful service deepens the sense of ease, inviting visitors to return and linger a little longer each time.

Hospitality is important to me. Nakasei's staff made me feel warmly welcome each time I went (twice in three days whilst I was in Tokyo), the food was delicious (I had Ebi Tendon - ebi tempura over rice), & the sake selection complemented the food (as a bartender at a Japanese restaurant this is noticeable to me). I had a seat overlooking the pond the first time & a table the last time. They excel at what they do. It's no wonder they've been in business since before the industrial revolution.

Last year, I have 9 course Kaiseki with my father. The tempura with salt quite impressive. Restaurant atmosphere especially private room could offer you the great dining experience.

“Every course is a work of art”. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly, from the moment we stepped into this restaurant, to the fabulous room they gave us facing the best view of the beautifully landscaped Koi pond. Every dish was perfectly prepared, and the taste was delicate and intense at the same time. The tempura goes well with a dash of the Himalayan salt. Even for a blunt instrument like me, my mouth tingled with an explosion of tastes. If you want to explore a traditional Japanese tempura restaurant, complete with the classic Japanese hospitality, this is the place. (Btw, we came here in 2017, nothing changed much, just as we liked it) Ps. Like all things traditional, this restaurant prefers that you make a reservation in advance, they do not have an online reservation, so you have to call them. But if I, with my pidgin English could communicate with a Japanese to make an advanced booking, so can you.

Really nice typical Japanese restaurant. Great tempura.

Best tempura I have ever had. The batter was thin and doesn’t over power the seafood. Can taste the freshness of the fish, eel, shrimp etc. Rice and miso soup also super tasty. Food is served on beautiful lacquer dishes and the restaurant is beautiful traditional Japanese style with a courtyard. Can also make reservations for private tatami rooms. Staff here very respectful, top class service and very friendly. An amazing experience - highly recommended.

A tasty tempura served in a beautiful and cosy place. If the restaurant is not full (at lunch ) ask for a private room with your friends they might offer you one and the view of the pond combined with the quietness goes perfectly with the meal.
